Bus Fest 6 started with a Saturday (day before) open house at Lavere's VW Restorations giant new location in Concord. Gary was giving tours throughout the day, and even cooked up a batch of his excellent chili to share with the crowd. I watched lots of people drooling over the shop, the vehicles and the wall of engine lids. Lots of photos were taken (I even snuck one of my little ones in front of the buses and wall). Thank you to Gary, his family and staff for their hospitality! With any luck on our part, this could happen again next year.
Sunday morning was unusually chilly for August, but the cool weather did not deter over 100 buses and trucks of all years, models and descriptions, 50 "other" Volkswagens and several hundred participants from coming out. I saw license plates from as far away as Arkansas and quite a few from Nevada, as well buses from all over California. While the number of buses was down slightly from previous events, the swap was bustling with activity and there were some excellent deals for the buyers.
There were a few standout vehicles in attendance, including Mark M's immaculate 1959 Binz Double Cab, Larry's equally nice 1959 Single Cab and Dave from Vacaville, who has not missed a Bus Fest yet with his Pepco Supercharged 1955 Barndoor Deluxe. The Sacramento contingent included Brian's super-clean camper, JP's awesome semi-custom (read that...FAST!) Deluxe, Justin's original SWR Double Cab, Todd's slammed 23 window and Greg's street/strip/road race Kombi to name a few.
A big thank you goes out to our very generous sponsors: Kombi Haus (donated a rebuilt transmission as the grand prize!), Lavere's VW Restoration, Honest Engine Midtown, Vintage Warehouse, West Coast Metric, Greg's VW Service, Niello VW and Wolfsburg West and a special thanks to the Bus Fest 6 crew: Marilee, Ken, John, Dusty and Shannon, who made the event run smoothly.
Thank you to all that attended and please stay tuned as preparations are well underway for Bus Fest 7 on Sunday Augsut 14, 2011.
